What is GRE?
The acronym GRE stands for Graduate Record Examination. It is a standardized test used primarily for admissions to graduate programs, especially in the United States and Canada.. The GRE is designed to assess the skills and knowledge that are considered important for success in graduate school, including verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing abilities.
Verbal Reasoning

The GRE scoring pattern is designed to evaluate different aspects of a student's abilities through various sections. Here’s a breakdown of the scoring pattern:
Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning
Score Range: Each section is scored on a scale of 130 to 170, in one-point increments.
Scoring Method: The scores for these sections are based on the number of correct answers and the difficulty level of the questions answered correctly. Each section has about 40 questions, and the total score for each section is combined to give the overall score in that area.
Percentiles: GRE scores are also reported with percentile ranks, which indicate the percentage of test takers who scored lower than a particular score.
Analytical Writing
Score Range: The Analytical Writing section is scored on a scale of 0 to 6, in half-point increments.
Scoring Method: This section includes two tasks: the “Issue” essay and the “Argument” essay. Each essay is scored by both a human rater and a computer-based scoring system. The scores are then averaged to produce the final score for this section.
Scoring Rubric: Essays are scored based on factors such as clarity of ideas, coherence, organization, and use of language.
Overall GRE Score
- The overall GRE score consists of the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores, each ranging from 130 to 170. These scores are reported together as a combined score in the range of 260 to 340.
- The Analytical Writing score is reported separately and does not affect the combined score of the Verbal and Quantitative sections.
Scoring Report

GRE TEST Fee info
As of the latest information, the GRE test fee is:
Standard GRE General Test Fee: $221
This fee includes sending your scores to up to four graduate programs. If you want to send your scores to additional programs, there is a fee of $30 per recipient.
Additional Fees
Additional Score Reports: $30 per recipient.
Change of Test Center: $50.
Change of Test Date: $50.
Rescheduling Fee: $50 (if done at least 4 days before your test date; otherwise, the entire fee is forfeited).

Fee Reduction: ETS offers a fee reduction for test-takers who meet certain eligibility criteria, such as those with financial need. For more information, you can check the ETS website or contact ETS directly.
